Home appliances in daily life are the potential culprits of electricity expenses, especially as these devices continue to consume power even in standby mode. Over time, these small consumptions add up and become significant expenses that cannot be ignored. Here are the power consumption situations and energy-saving tips for some household appliances:

7th place: Washing Machine: In the washing mode of the washing machine, the gentle wash mode consumes more power than the strong wash mode. The operation and frequent stopping of the gentle wash mode result in a current at restart that is six times the rated current, making the gentle wash mode actually more power-consuming than the strong wash mode.

6th place: Electric Cooker: The power consumption of an electric cooker is comparable to that of a small air conditioner, consuming 1 kilowatt-hour in just one hour. Over the year, this adds up to about 365 kilowatt-hours. Energy-saving tips include soaking rice for 30 minutes before cooking to soften it and reduce cooking time, as well as adding hot water to the inner pot when cooking rice to eliminate the need to heat water to 100 degrees, saving 30% to 40% of the cooking time.

5th place: Refrigerator: Refrigerators are power-hungry appliances as they need to be on 24 hours a day to keep food fresh. Tests show that, when the external temperature is stable at 25 degrees Celsius, only 70% of the refrigeration area should be filled to avoid poor circulation of cold air. In the freezer, as long as the air outlet is not blocked, filling it helps the ingredients freeze each other, further saving electricity.

4th place: Electric Water Heater: A 10-liter electric water heater uses about 2 kilowatt-hours of electricity per day, totaling around 730 kilowatt-hours per year. Energy-saving tips include using the timer function to control the on-off time of the electric water heater, saving 36% of electricity consumption.

3rd place: TV Set-Top Box: The TV itself does not consume much power, but the often overlooked set-top box has an operating power of about 16 watts and needs to be on continuously for 24 hours. A simple power-saving method is to unplug the power, especially when not watching TV, by disconnecting both the set-top box and TV plugs. Cumulatively, these actions can save a considerable amount on the electricity bill.

2nd place: Air Conditioner: Most air conditioners are variable frequency, meaning they can adjust the output temperature based on the outdoor temperature, making them more energy-efficient. Cleaning the air conditioner regularly and adjusting it to sleep mode at night are methods to save on the electricity bill. An air conditioner can consume almost 1 kilowatt-hour per hour. Keeping the temperature between 26 and 28 degrees, directing the airflow upwards, and using a fan or circulating fan can further save energy.

1st place: Water Heater: With a maximum power of 3000 watts, the electric water heater is the champion in home electricity consumption. If left on all day, the power consumption can reach around 20 kilowatt-hours. It is recommended to turn off the water heater when not in use, turn it on an hour before use, and turn it off when it reaches the desired temperature, saving a considerable amount on the electricity bill.

The best way to save electricity, regardless of the appliance, is to unplug the plug after use, or purchase sockets with switches, turning off the switch on the socket after using the appliance, avoiding standby mode and eliminating the hassle of plugging and unplugging. These small measures, when accumulated, can show tangible results on each electricity bill.
