Saudi Arabia is creating an innovative, ultra-long city in the desert. Named “The Line,” this city stretches over 170 kilometers, is just 200 meters wide, and aims to achieve zero carbon emissions.

In The Line, there are no cars, only people strolling leisurely through the streets. Homes are situated right above workplaces, with shops, gyms, and other amenities nearby, all accessible within a five-minute walk. Imagine living in a narrow space enclosed by tall walls—does this lifestyle appeal to you? This city, currently under construction, will become a striking feature in Saudi Arabia’s Tabuk region.

In January 2021, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman announced this ambitious project. The futuristic city will be built along the Red Sea, rising over 500 meters in height and eventually housing 9 million people. The Line’s design concept includes vertical zoning and is enclosed by spectacular mirrored walls on both sides.

The city is planned in three main zones: residential, commercial, and transit. The residential area will be powered by solar panels, and all forms of transport, including underground high-speed trains, will be carbon-free. This design allows residents to travel from one end of the city to the other in just 20 minutes.

Construction of the city is underway, with the first phase expected to be completed by 2030. The total cost reaches $1 trillion, demonstrating Saudi Arabia’s determination to shift away from oil dependency towards green energy. However, the project has also raised some environmental and social concerns, such as its impact on bird migration and disputes over indigenous land rights.

Opinions vary on this ambitious project. Supporters see a vision of an innovative and sustainable future city, while critics question its feasibility, safety, and environmental impact. Regardless, the construction of The Line is moving forward, marking a significant step for Saudi Arabia to showcase its innovative spirit and commitment to green initiatives to the world.
